The 19.7 inch shade fits a breakfast nook, a two-person table or a spot above a bar counter. Take the 23.6 inch one if it hangs alone over a full dining table, where the smaller shade tends to look undersized. Both are 9.8 inches tall, so the choice is only about width.

One standard E26 bulb, LED, up to 40W. A warm white bulb around 2700K suits the paper best, because a cool white one makes the shade look gray instead of cream. Stay under the 40W limit.

It wires into a ceiling junction box on 110 to 120V. There is no plug and no switch on the cord, so it runs off your wall switch. If you have not wired a ceiling light before, have an electrician hang it.

Most people leave 30 to 36 inches between the tabletop and the bottom of the shade. That keeps the bulb out of your eye line once you sit down. The hanging height is adjustable while you install it, so you set the exact drop yourself.

The light has no dimmer of its own. It dims if you put a dimmable bulb in it and run it off a compatible wall dimmer. A regular LED bulb on a dimmer will buzz or flicker, so check the bulb packaging before you buy one.

Not with an LED bulb inside the 40W limit. LEDs run much cooler than old incandescent bulbs, which is what makes a paper shade practical in the first place. Keep the bulb centred in the shade rather than pushed up against the paper, and do not fit a halogen bulb.

Dust it every few weeks with a dry microfiber cloth, or with the soft brush of a vacuum on its lowest setting. Work from the top of the shade downward and use light pressure, because cotton paper marks if you rub it.

For a mark, cut the power at the breaker and let the bulb cool completely first. Then dab, do not wipe, with a barely damp cloth and let the spot dry on its own. No soap, no solvent, and never a wet cloth on the paper.

Keep it in dry indoor rooms. Directly above a stove, in a bathroom or on a covered porch the paper picks up moisture and starts to sag or stain.
